Welcome to The Long Dark, with its fresh take on survival and exploration - something Wired magazine called the cherry on top of the entire genre. The Long Dark is a thoughtful game focused on survival and exploration, where players must make their own decisions while navigating a vast, cold wilderness that has undergone a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies here - just you, the freezing cold, and what Mother Nature has in store for you. WINTERMUTE is part of the first story season of The Long Dark and includes four out of five episodes. In December 2018, the Redux update radically revamped two episodes, overhauling the quest system, rewriting the story, dialogues, animations, and more. Four difficulty levels allow you to choose the challenge that suits you, from Pilgrim, designed for a peaceful and contemplative experience, to Interloper, where even the most seasoned players will last only a week. If none of these fit your style, create your own challenge with the Custom Mode. Several standalone challenge modes offer tasks that take 1-3 hours to complete. For instance, Whiteout, where you need to gather enough supplies to survive a terrible blizzard, or Hunted, where you must escape from a bloodthirsty bear. Completing these unlocks feats - long-term boosts in survival mode. At launch, five challenges will be available, with more to come.
