Your journey begins in Area 05, an evacuated zone nestled in the southeastern part of Finland. Here, you'll discover shelters, traders, tasks, and the starting loot essential for survival. However, the peace in Area 05 is frequently disrupted by the Bandits, a rogue group exploiting the absence of law and order. Once you've gathered enough loot and gear, your adventure leads you eastward to the Border Zone - the guarded frontier between Finland and Russia. Each Border Zone map presents a unique crossing point with its own set of challenges. Some crossings might be littered with mines or physical barriers, while others might require navigating waterways by boat. Adding to the difficulty, the Border Zone is watched over by the Guards, foreign soldiers who are armed, corrupt, and often supported by air units to deter crossings. Successfully making it past the Border Zone brings you into Vostok. This Russian territory is a high-risk, high-reward area, home to the game's most valuable loot. Each Vostok map is a permadeath zone - if you fall in Area 05 or the Border Zone, you lose only what you carry, but in Vostok, everything is at stake. Vostok is controlled by the Military, a formidable force equipped with heavy weapons and armored vehicles, presenting the game's greatest threat with their aim to drive you back. The game features a 24-hour day and night cycle, dynamically altering the environment with the changing positions of the sun and moon. While you can manipulate time by sleeping, preparing for the darkness is crucial as you explore the world. Weather conditions are randomized, ranging from sunny to stormy, and sometimes, if you're lucky, you might witness the northern lights on a clear night. Survive long enough, and you'll notice the seasons transitioning from summer to winter, bringing challenges like snow and cold. Players can also opt for a constant summer or winter mode. Beyond these ever-changing conditions, dynamic events occur randomly, from ambient sounds to aerial activities such as airdrops and crash sites, as well as faction-based special events. Each playthrough offers a unique experience where scavenging, trading, and crafting hundreds of unique items - based on real-world parameters and progressive loot tiers - are crucial for progression. Loot is physically-based, meaning it never spawns in the same place twice. You'll encounter hundreds of lootable items per map, with any logical storage area serving as an interactive loot container. Consumables, clothing, medical supplies, tools, electronics, weapons, and more await discovery. Managing loot is streamlined with a tetris-style inventory system that allows for dynamic icons, item combining, item stacking, and quick actions to enhance the looting experience. Trade with in-game traders using an intuitive bartering system. Each trader specializes in certain themes, such as tools, medical supplies, weapons, and furniture. The trade system relies purely on bartering, valuing items based on their post-apocalyptic utility, where even toilet paper can be highly prized. Traders offer tasks and services like medical care or weapon maintenance. The task system is tied to trader levels, and through tasks, you can earn rare items, unlock new shelters, and uncover clues to lore mysteries. Shelters serve as safe havens and storage spaces, and are the only places where you can save your game. You'll often need multiple shelters as you journey eastward. Each shelter varies in size and customization options, from a cozy cabin to a sprawling concrete bunker. Some shelters are available by default, while others require keys earned through trader tasks. All shelters start with a basic furniture setup, but everything can be customized via a decoration mode. This mode lets you modify all furniture-related elements, allowing you to arrange, move, and rotate furniture to your liking. You can also acquire new furniture through crafting or trading. Once your shelter is set up, you can start placing items for storage. Furniture containers are available for storage, but you can also place items individually as you prefer. All items are physics-based, and their positions are saved automatically upon exiting the shelter. Road to Vostok is a hardcore survival game that offers freedom in playstyle. You're not compelled to enter the permadeath zone, delve into the lore, or adhere to a specific role. In one playthrough, you might be a combat-focused character clad in military gear, and in another, a solitary fisherman playing the harmonica on a remote island. The story is yours to create, with the game providing the tools you need.
