About This Game

In the dystopian city of Phonopolis, daily life is controlled by ever-present loudspeakers that dictate every move its people make. Citizens follow the strict orders of the authoritarian Leader, working together to fulfill his ambitious dream. Soon, the Absolute Tone will echo through the city — a sound so powerful it threatens to erase the last traces of humanity from everyone who hears it. By chance or destiny, a young dustman named Felix becomes the only one to truly sense the danger. Now, it is up to him to stop the Leader from turning every citizen into a mindless servant forever. Inspired by the works of Karel Čapek and George Orwell, the story of Phonopolis delves into themes of social control and individual freedom, but keeps the overall adventure playful and light. With Felix immune to the Leader’s commands, you can use the city’s loudspeakers to solve clever puzzles involving other characters. At other times, you will interact with the cardboard world in creative and unexpected ways — spin walls, rearrange floors, operate strange machines, or pull down paper curtains. Every puzzle is seamlessly woven into the environment, offering a fresh challenge each time. Phonopolis stands as a metaphor for utopian yet totalitarian societies, brought to life as a city built entirely from real cardboard. The game captures the nostalgic spirit of classic stop-motion animation, with every building, character, and wisp of smoke hand-painted on paper before being transformed into the game’s 3D world. Its unique visual style draws inspiration from avant-garde movements of the interwar years, including constructivism, futurism, and suprematism, reflecting their use as powerful tools of propaganda. The city’s striking look is matched by an evocative soundtrack from Tomáš Dvořák, also known as Floex, the composer behind Machinarium and Samorost 3.
